The 2019 Met Gala in New York, an annual event organised by Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour, famed for it’s illustrious celebrity guest list, lavish outfits and supposed regal roots, most definitely is nowadays beginning to resemble a “freak show” within the travelling circus.
Yet, people seem very interested to look on and photograph this event, for which guests pay $35,000 a seat, if they’re invited by Anna Wintour, which is still seemingly a very hot ticket in the celebrity world.
Last night, the theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ in order to once again raise money for the museum’s Costume Institute, following on from last year’s “blasphemous” exhibit of ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination,’ which was a direct affront to Catholics, and in this year’s show, there was most definitely enough on show, to get you questioning the whole realm of modern day celebrity in just one event.
Hosted by British singer Harry Styles, wearing a sheer top, high heels and one earring, which he seemed to enjoy a bit too much, surely crushing and confusing the hearts of his tween-teen fanbase in the process.
He was joined by other guests such as former date rape-administering “prostitute artist,” Cardi B, wearing a duvet dress resembling a big splattered bird, complete with 30,000 feathers, which was certainly a bit much. But, she’s so glamorous, right?
Plus, fellow “mind controlled” pop star Katy Perry, dressed up as a chandelier, in a somewhat humorous get up, reminding us of some inanimate ceiling object from Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ or something?
Yes, and this was just the tip of the iceberg, that traversed down the pink carpet at the Met Gala 2019 in New York City. Fun times, eh?! Yes, actor Jared Leto, came dressed as a lady in red, with a beard, holding a wax work of his own head, which was one of the most disturbing things that we’ve ever seen at a carpet event. Mission accomplished!
Whilst Lady Gaga wore four outfits to make her entrance, from a pink bow travesty, to a black dress, then back to a loose pink cocktail dress, and ending up wearing black boots, black panties and a black bra, just to finish off her entrance on a nude note, by looking like a glamourised stripper, or even a made up, ex-porn star. Clearly, having any moral fibre isn’t a concern at this carpet event.
The colourful entertainment family of the Kardashian-Jenners’ would surely bring about some normalcy into this chaotic freak show, and that they did, by dressing up as colourful cartoon characters, and one wonders how Corey Gamble, Kanye West and Travis Scott, actually feel about partaking in this event, given it’s over the top, and outrageous nature? Or is this just one of the many things that they have to sign up for as a prerequisite inside the Jenner-Kardashian family?
It must be said that Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid stole the show, by sticking to some real female glamour and class, whilst the rest of the attendees, will be looking back in years to come at this evening, and saying, “what the hell was I wearing?”
What is wrong by giving the audience something classy and beautiful at one of these events? As opposed to making yourself into a desperate “publicity-seeking” abomination? Well, at least there were a couple of “classy ladies” on the night.
But, surely this male “cross-dressing,” and failed “glamour” ego fest, was surely an eye sore and a reminder that all is not well, nor relevant in the celebrity world in 2019, since in the eyes of onlookers, they’d be questioning any reason as to why we should pay any attention to these people, whom are walking down this pink carpet in the very first place?
These caricatures and names from the A, B or D list, dressed in outlandish outfits, makes you wonder, what is the appeal and purpose of this gala? Since in a saturated celebrity scene, where originality and talent have been sacrificed for one agenda, void of personal creativity or any original expression, then is it any wonder why nobody really cares about the Met Gala and finds it extremely bizarre, summed up by the notion of a “freak show” in a travelling circus?
Regardless, this prelude to the exhibition of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion,’ an interpretation on the title of Susan Sontag’s essay, opens on May 8th and runs until September 8th, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which might be more interesting to see, than these celebrities walking down a pink carpet, dressed up like clownish figurines. Or, let’s at least hope so…
We can still remember a time, when celebrities were famous for something, and were actually well known for their talents in something original, as opposed to about 90% of those celebrities in attendance, at last night’s Met Gala, minus J Lo, of course.
Well, that was it for the Met Gala 2019! Tell us what you think about these outfits at the Met Gala in the comments section down below! But, in terms of future celebrity dress up events, there’s the Cannes Film Festival coming up soon, and then it’s pretty much quiet until at least Halloween, we think! Which is good news for all, so we can all focus on more pertinent news, until then.
