After what feels like months of speculation, Henry Cavill and fans have finally got their wish, as he has been cast as Geralt in ‘The Witcher’ Netflix series. Cavill had been the favourite to portray the silver-haired badass since the projects announcement.
The actor has reached superstardom in the last few years thanks to his roles as Superman in the DC Extended Universe, and as August Walker in ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’. From these movies alone, he’s already showed his action-chops, but this new series will offer the opportunity to show new depths as Geralt comes across a subtle yet emotionally complex character.
The new show will run for eight episodes in its first season, with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serving as executive-producer. The venture had been green-lit months ago, but no official news had been announced regarding the production. This casting of Cavill as Geralt marks a huge step in making this passion project into a reality.
‘The Witcher’ is an immensely popular fantasy book series written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The titular fighters are specialist monster hunters who develop powerful abilities when they are young, then later honing their skills through training and body-modification. The franchise follows main protagonist Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who travels around the land hunting the monsters which terrorise the population. The story is often driven by his relationship with his beloved Yennefer and their adopted daughter Ciri.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had ‘The Witcher’ on our screens though, since in 2001’s ‘The Hexer’ film and subsequent TV series was the maiden live-action voyage for these characters. However, it was the successful video game series that propelled the franchise into the mainstream consciousness. In total, the games have sold over 33 million copies, with ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ being hailed as one of the greatest RPGs of all-time.
The casting has been met with near universal praise, with even Geralt’s voice actor from the games giving Cavill his blessing. Doug Cockle posted on Twitter: ‘People keep asking… so… let me go on record saying I think that #HenryCavill will do a great job as #GeraltOfRivia! He’ll make it his own of course, as well he should, and I can’t wait to see what @LHissrich and the whole @netflix team creates. It’s gonna be #Magic‘
We’re still all awaiting the concrete news about when the series will premiere on Netflix. But, what we do know, is that we can’t wait to binge the series when it finally drops.
