Singer Shakira Facing Tax Evasion Charges In Spain

Columbian singer Shakira allegedly failed to pay income tax while living in Barcelona between 2012 and 2014. She is currently under investigation by the Spanish authorities for possible tax evasion. So, does this mean her hips do lie?

She moved from the Bahamas to Barcelona in 2015, and currently lives in the northeastern city with her partner, footballer Gerard Pique, and their two children. However, authorities suspect she already lived there when she allegedly failed to pay her income taxes.

Prosecutor Jose Miguel Company said that the Spanish tax authorities referred the inquiry in December, and that a decision is expected by mid-June, when Shakira is due to begin a tour – one that she had postponed twice before, due to recovering from vocal cord problems.

Those close to the singer deny there was any tax evasion, and claim she was mostly out of the country during that time. They also stated that Shakira has always obliged with her tax payments.

Anna Forastier, spokesperson for auditing firm PwC, confirmed that the company has been hired by Shakira for the investigation, but declined to give out any details.

Shakira and other musical artists, such as Madonna and Bono (U2’s lead singer) were named in the “Paradise Papers” leaks that detailed offshore tax arrangements of high-profile people.

It said that in 2009, Shakira relocated her intellectual property rights and brands to a Malta company Tournesol Ltd, which they themselves have been accused of running a tax haven. The papers also reportedly listed her as a resident of the Bahamas, despite living in Barcelona.

Shakira’s lawyer had told those working on the Paradise Papers that Tournesol Ltd “fulfils all legal requirements. All of the corresponding information relative to this entity is public and transparent.”

Her lawyer also added that as an international artist, the singer had lived in a number of places “throughout her professional career and, in every case, has fully met the laws of all the jurisdictions where she has resided”.

Shakira has not yet commented publicly on the accusations.
