Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden are set to branch out into a whole new range of awesomeness with their very own comic book series!
The new comic books, which see the band partner with US science fiction publishers Heavy Metal Publishing, are based on their mobile role-playing game, Iron Maiden: Legacy of The Beast, where players play as their mascot Eddie AKA Eddie the Head.
English Heavy metal band Iron Maiden, originally formed in 1975 have released a total of 38 albums and each one has featured Eddie on the album artwork. But where did Eddie come from? According to guitarist Dave Murray, the name was inspired by an old joke:
“A wife had a baby, but it was born with only a head and no body. ‘Don’t worry,’ says the doctor. ‘Bring him back in five years’ time, and we’ll probably have a body for him’. So, five years go by, and there’s Eddie the ‘Ead, as his parents have called him, sitting on the mantelpiece, when in walks his dad. ‘Son,’ he says, ‘today’s a very special day. It’s your fifth birthday, and we’ve got a very special surprise for you.’ ‘Oh no,’ says Eddie. ‘Not another fucking hat!”
Dave Beasley who was originally in charge of lighting and pyrotechnics for the band claims he was the original face of Eddie as he created a papier-mâché mask of Eddie for the stage using his face – crazy!
Heavy Metal Publishing has released a small preview about the plot of the comics: “Eddie’s immortal soul is shattered and strewn across the cosmos, and now, Eddie must journey across space and time to battle the twisted legions of The Beast, seek out the lost shards of his soul, and bring order to the realms.”
Sounds pretty kick ass to us!
Heavy Metal CEO Jeff Krelitz had this to say about the merger: “As a lifelong fan of Iron Maiden, it is a privilege to publish the first comic giving a narrative to their iconic mascot, Eddie,”
Some other amazing metal bands such as SLAYER, KISS, and GWAR have produced comic book series, but this series has been 35 years in the making and it has finally arrived.
Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast will appear in the next issue of Heavy Metal prior to launching a standalone comics series which will be released in October. The first of five issues will go on sale on the 11th of October 2017.
